Merrythought Cheeky Bear – Vintage 1970s London Gold Mohair Teddy Bear

A wonderfully characterful vintage Merrythought Cheeky Bear, estimated to date from the 1970s. The iconic Cheeky design was introduced by Merrythought in 1957, following its earlier debut as “Teddy T” in 1955, and has become one of the company’s most recognisable and enduring teddy bear designs.

This particularly sweet Cheeky Bear is made from beautiful London gold-coloured mohair and features the classic wide, cheeky grin, floppy ears and pale orange muzzle. He has brown velveteen paw pads, with his nose, mouth and claws all carefully hand stitched in black. An aged gold satin ribbon is tied around his neck, completing his traditional vintage appearance.

The bells sewn inside each ear still jingle, adding to his wonderful character and charm. His plastic safety eyes and the satin-style printed label stitched to the lower paw pad are features associated with Merrythought Cheeky Bears produced during the 1960s and 1970s, and we estimate this particular bear to be from the 1970s.

The bear retains both his official Merrythought sewn foot label and side label, which is a lovely feature for collectors. He is in very good condition for his age and displays beautifully. This bear measures 28cm / 11" in height.

Also included is a charming mohair teddy bear coin purse with a stud closure. This is not an original accessory belonging to the bear and is included separately, but makes a delightful accompanying piece.

The Cheeky Bear design remains in production today, making these vintage examples particularly appealing to collectors who appreciate the history and evolution of this much-loved Merrythought character.
