Merrythought “Billy the Baker’s Boy” GT12GD – Vintage Limited Edition Purest Mohair Bear 

A charming piece of British teddy bear history, this vintage Merrythought “Billy the Baker’s Boy” (model GT12GD) was designed by Jackie Revitt in the 1990s and made in the United Kingdom. Crafted from fine mohair plush in a soft beige and brown tone, Billy is a wonderfully characterful limited-edition collectable with plenty of delightful period detail.

The story behind Billy is set in 1930, when the young Baker’s Boy has just two loaves left to deliver. Having only recently started work at the bakery, Billy must make his deliveries on foot, although he has been promised a bicycle if he is a good lad and works hard! His charming character is beautifully brought to life with his traditional baker’s outfit, including a heavy-duty printed cotton apron and matching cap. He carries a wicker basket containing two miniature loaves, complete with a gingham cloth.

Billy is fully jointed and features pale brown felt paw and foot pads, bright black button eyes and a hand-stitched brown nose and mouth. His flat lower foot pads allow him to stand freely, making him particularly appealing for display. Measuring approximately 12 inches (28 cm), he is a lovely size for showcasing alongside other vintage teddy bears and collectables.  Original swing tag of authenticity is unopened and attached and the Merrythought stitched label to the paw pad is in tact.  

Merrythought is one of Britain’s best-known teddy bear manufacturers, and Jackie Revitt’s character bears from the 1990s are especially appealing to collectors. Billy the Baker’s Boy was produced as a limited-edition release, with this being 212 0f 500. This bear is in excellent condition with minimal wear to the edge of the wicker basket.

A wonderfully nostalgic and highly characterful Merrythought bear, Billy would make a charming addition to any vintage teddy bear collection, British teddy bear display or collection of limited-edition Merrythought bears.
